How to Report a Hit and Run

It would be ideal if everyone would stand up to the responsibility after hitting another person or vehicle. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Some drivers leave the scene immediately after a collision leaving the victim to deal with the consequences alone. According to the Vancouver Police Department, the number of hit and run claims has been on the rise. Just in Vancouver, there is close to 1000 claims per month. If you are the victim of a hit and run accident, remain calm and remember to do your best to collect the following:

  • If you have a camera/phone camera, take pictures of the fleeing driver’s vehicle and license plate. Also take pictures of any damages. If you do not have a camera, try to get the license plate number down as the priority, even if it is partial.
  • Note the identity of the driver, have a description if possible.
  • Have a description of the vehicle including: type, make, color.
  • Note the direction the vehicle went.
  • Record the time and place of the crash.
  • Seek witnesses. Get their names and contact information.

Call the police as soon as possible, especially if there is a chance that they could stop the driver. Provide them with relevant info such as the license plate number, a description of the driver and vehicle, and the direction the vehicle went as noted above. If you have suffered injuries, a police report will be required down the road. It is best to contact the police within 24 hours if not immediately.

Report a hit and run claim to ICBC. Note that hit and run accidents in BC must be reported by phone.

If you could not get information at the time the hit and run occurred, you would want to go back to the collision location to post notices to seek witnesses. Include the time and place of the crash. If you have not taken photos, it is also a good chance to look for evidence to support your claim. Watch out for items such as scratch marks, paint chips, and damage done to infrastructure. You may also post an ad online or in local newspapers to ask witnesses to come forward.
