ICBC Advises Drivers to Be Mindful of Cyclists During Summer

As the warm, sunny weather hits Metro Vancouver, more cyclists are hitting the streets and bike paths, so the Insurance Corporation of B.C. (ICBC) is asking drivers to be especially mindful of sharing the road, as reported by a CTV news story.

The safety advisory from ICBC also comes on the heels of the recent Bike to Work Week in B.C., which began on May 29th and encourages people to enjoy commuting to work by bicycle. During the 2016 instalment, about 37,000 people participated in Bike to Work Week.

Spring and summer are the most popular seasons for bicyclists because of the fair weather. However, this also means sharp increases in personal injuries to bicyclists during the nice weather, with a large majority of them involving contact with motor vehicles.

According to ICBC data, an average of 740 cyclists are injured and seven killed in car crashes every year between the months of June and September. Additionally, those numbers are likely higher in reality once you factor in unreported injuries and car accidents.

Drivers are asked to pay special attention to yielding to cyclists when they have the right of way, signal well in advance and to keep a safe distance. Keeping eyes on the road and away from cell phones is also a top tip.

In turn, ICBC is also asking cyclists to always wear helmets and reflective gear, use bike lanes when possible, avoid sidewalks and obey the rules of the road.

If you are a bicyclist injured by a motor vehicle, make sure your rights are protected so you can secure your livelihood and recover from your injuries.
